In the field of product and project development, it is normal for a single task to necessitate the involvement of several units or teams. To simplify this back-and-forth process, you can customize our pre-made template and reduce role confusion while encouraging increased role clarity, accountability, and transparency from the start.

Your first step is to list down your tasks or action items in the first column of the spreadsheet. Unlike other templates, this template does not categorize tasks by phase. Once you have a list of all your tasks, make sure you review it once alongside other members of your team so you don’t miss out on anything; significant or trivial. Your next step is to identify all the different teams involved across all phases of your project lifecycle: from initial planning to project closure.

Naturally, the number and nature of your teams will vary depending on the nature of your project and what industry you are associated with. Now that you have your tasks down in a column, and teams plotted in a row – you will end up with a grid-like structure as shown below.

To make it easy for you to visualize the relationships between team, task, and role, we have used a color-coded system where RACI roles are represented using circles of different colors: Responsible (Red), Accountable (Orange), Consulted (Green,) and Informed (Blue). Use our drop-down menus to select the right RACI role under each team for every task. Remember, before you start using your downloaded file, make sure you macro-enable it so you can fully benefit from the functionalities we have programmed into this spreadsheet.

RACI Matrix template can be easily downloaded and used in .xlsx and .xltx formats. It can also be accessed and modified in Google Sheets for cloud-based sharing and collaboration and in OpenDocument (ODS) format for compatibility with various word processors.
