The SMART Goal Method was introduced in 1981 by consultant George T. Doran. Along with Arthur Miller and James Cunningham, Doran published the paper “There’s a S.M.A.R.T. way to write management goals and objectives” in the journal Management Review. In the paper, he used the acronym SMART to refer to goals that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound.

  • Specific: Define your goal. Explain the goal or objective in clear and precise language.
  • Measurable: Define the exact parameters or metrics that can be used to track your progress.
  • Achievable: The goal should be realistic and align with the available resources, time, and abilities.
  • Relevant: The goal should be meaningful and contribute to a broader objective.
  • Time-Bound: The goal should have a realistic deadline to keep you focused and motivated.

The purpose of this approach is to help you reflect on your goals and objectives and focus on the most important aspects of your goal. Some big plans and complex goals can feel overwhelming, and by breaking down each element according to the SMART method, you can focus on one thing at a time. In each of the templates in this collection, you will find detailed prompts and instructions to help you understand the purpose of each section. By filling out the worksheet, you will be able to assess whether your goals are realistic and achievable. You can adjust timelines or components of the goals through the exercise. Whether you have a personal goal or are executing a project at work, leverage these templates to set an action plan and achieve success.
