This template is a straightforward RACI Matrix that assists you in allocating roles and responsibilities to each member of your team in relation to each project activity. Here, we do not group project work (that is, tasks) by phase or team members by team, in contrast to other templates in our RACI series.

You must first map out your tasks horizontally (in the top row of our spreadsheet): note that there is no set order in which tasks are provided in these templates, such as chronologically or phase-wise. Now replace the dummy text in the first column with the names of your team members.  After you have your team members and tasks listed, it’s time to add more detail to the grid structure by using our integrated drop-down menus, which allow you to choose how each team member relates to each task: Informed, Consulted, Accountable, and Responsible.

The initial letter of each of these task ownership levels (R, A, C, or I) is used to symbolize it. When creating the layout for this template, we went for vibrant, bold colors with a minimalist design – making this template also perfect for print use. To maximize the effectiveness of the hard copy, make sure the completed version of your Matrix is placed in a prominent spot accessible to all members of your project team.

A RACI chart encourages members of your project team to take responsibility for their work—or defer to someone else when needed.  It also ensures you don’t have multiple people working on the same task or against one another because tasks weren’t clearly defined at the onset.

If you’re about to start a complex project, the RACI matrix can pretty much be your north star guiding your progress as a robust blueprint of action and of course, being a live, detailed document you can reference throughout the project to get clarity on roles and responsibilities. Use this customizable template to assign and clarify roles and responsibilities for each member of your project team.

Our templates, created in Microsoft Excel, can be shared online through Google Sheets or downloaded to your device in .xlsx, .xltx, and .ods formats. These templates are free, fillable, print-ready, and can be easily scaled to meet the specific needs and requirements of your project.
