Whether you are a budding entrepreneur or someone on their journey of personal development, it’s always good to aim high. But when it comes to actually setting goals, it’s important to balance your aspirations with reality.

Lucky for you, we have just the goal-setting guide you need – the SMART Goal Framework. Popularly used in the area of project management and employee performance management, the SMART framework helps you create more effective action plans and set ‘smarter’ goals.

First proposed by George Doran in the November 1981 issue of Management Review, S.M.A.R.T stands for Smart, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-bound. In our editable SMART Template, you simply address and justify each component of the framework in light of the specific project or task you are working on. Each criterion plays an important role in strategic planning and objective development.

Now, let’s explore each component of our template in more detail:

Specific

Specific goals are clear, actionable, and include precise, well-defined details. This makes a goal easy to understand and focused, while also facilitating other members of a team to monitor its progress or performance.

For example, a content writing agency may have a specific goal to ‘write 10 guest blogs within the next thirty days on healthcare niche’.

Remember, having clear objectives translates to higher productivity so make sure to avoid the use of elusive or ambiguous language in this part.

Measurable

In this section, you want to find a way to quantify your progress. In other words, what does success look like? Or what metrics will you use to measure it?

Depending on your particular project context, the method of measurement may either be quantitative (that is, defined in numbers) or qualitative.

For example, a 10% conversion rate for an e-commerce website or 100k views on a YouTube video are both examples of quantitative ways of measuring the success of a goal. While client testimonials or user feedback are qualitative indicators of success. Either way, you must come together as a team to identify the most relevant and feasible data sources and collection methods in light of your project.

On an individual level, measuring success can make your personal development goals more tangible and focused. For example, if your goal is to learn a particular skill (say, backend coding) – you can make it measurable by identifying learning outcomes you expect by the end of a course, such as managing databases, learning programming languages, and developing a basic understanding of the front-end ecosystem.

Achievable

In this section, you want to make sure your goals are realistic and attainable and not just dreamy words on paper.

Fill out this section in light of the skills and resources (human and material) needed to achieve a particular goal versus the skills & resources you have available at your disposal. You may also refer to any interpersonal or inter-team coordination or guidance you may need in pursuance of a goal.

In short, here you acknowledge and list up the practical requirements necessary to accomplish the goal as well as any budgetary constraints you need to consider. For a more in-depth breakdown of the material and human resources needed for a project, make sure to check out our Resource Plan template to allocate, manage and track resources in a more effective and efficient way.

Relevant

Now ask yourself why is this goal important? And how does it contribute to your long-term strategic objectives?

In this section, we want to establish a concrete connection between a specific goal and the broader project agenda. Let’s say there is a software company, whose goal is to develop a user-friendly smartphone app. Now this must be connected to a broader business objective; for example, the company may want to focus on improving its customer experience.

In fact, launching any new product or service must be aligned with overall business or department objectives – denoting exactly how each new product or service will contribute to overall growth and development for stakeholders.

Feel free to check out our Prioritization Matrix, which allows you to identify which projects or tasks are more relevant or significant based on their impact and effort!

Time-bound

In this last section, we focus on the time factor of your goal. This will naturally depend on how urgent or time-sensitive a certain task or project may be.

Setting your goals within a clear timeframe is imperative if you want to meet your targets on time. For many commercial or development projects, this may be the end of the fiscal year; for others, it may be the end or start of a holiday season.

You can also simply specify a set number of days or months. All in all, deadlines create a sense of urgency and motivate your team to optimize workflow and deliver on time.

For better tracking, feel free to use our free Project Timeline template to plan and organize tasks in a more visual and systematic way.

Did You Know?

According to a Michigan State University Extension study, individuals who wrote down their goals and outlined SMART steps had a 33% higher success rate than those who didn’t document their goals.

Note that you can also use other variations of the SMART Framework with variables such as Strategic instead of Specific, Assignable instead of Achievable, and Realistic instead of Relevant. Our editable Word file allows you to change the section headings to these alternative criteria.
