If you’re looking for a way to improve your Yahtzee game at your own pace, the Yahtzee Solitaire version by WordLayouts is just what you need. Designed for solo players who want to practice and push their skills further, this version turns dice rolling into a thoughtful, strategic experience.
How to Play the Solitaire Yahtzee
So the rules remain the same as in the classic Yahtzee game, but there is a special twist in the Solitaire version; you’ll play three full games on your own and try to get the highest score possible in each round. Let us break it down step by step:
Step 1: Setup
So first things first: get your Solitaire Yahtzee score sheet ready! Each game has 13 categories to fill out, just like in the classic version:
- Upper Section: Ones, Twos, Threes, Fours, Fives, Sixes
- Lower Section: Three of a Kind, Four of a Kind, Full House, Small Straight, Large Straight, Yahtzee, Chance
You’ll play three full games, each with 13 rounds. In every round, you’ll roll the dice and decide which category to fill in.
Step 2: Rolling the dice
- Roll all five dice to start your turn.
- After the first roll, pick which dice you want to keep and which you want to roll again. You can roll up to two more times per turn (three rolls total).
- Once you’re happy with your dice, either after the third roll or earlier, choose one of the remaining categories on your score sheet to assign your score.
For example, if you roll three 4s, a 2, and a 5, you might decide to fill the “Fours” category with 12 points.
If your roll doesn’t fit well into any category, you’ll have to score zero in one of the remaining spots.
Step 3: Filling all 13 categories
Now you have to keep filling in the categories one by one until you’ve completed all 13 for the game. Remember, once you pick a category for a roll, that choice is final.
Repeat this for all three games, completing a full score sheet each time.
Step 4: Bonuses and special scoring
- Upper Section Bonus: If your total in the Upper Section hits 63 or more at the end of a game, you earn a bonus of +35 points.
- Extra Yahtzee Bonus: And if you roll more than one Yahtzee (five of a kind) in a game? You get +100 bonus points for each extra Yahtzee.
Step 5: Track your progress
After all three games, add up your scores and compare how you did. Use the Solitaire Notes Sheet to jot down thoughts, strategies, or patterns you noticed to learn and improve.
