You might have just said yes to your fiancé(e). But if you are here, chances are you have already started stressing about wedding planning instead of enjoying the “I just got engaged” bliss.
Thankfully, a wedding planning checklist can help you relax a bit. It is a great tool that breaks down the whole planning process into clear stages and in the right order.
But creating a checklist from scratch can be quite overwhelming. But don’t worry, we have got you covered. The wedding planning checklist at Wordlayouts provides a comprehensive 12-18 month plan. Each section is designed to keep vendor coordination, deadlines, decisions, and logistics moving in the right order.
So, whether you are “groom to be” or “bride to be,” this planner can help you handle high-priority tasks beforehand so that you can later focus on glowing, not stressing about the wedding. So let’s dive in.
Planning Phases
To make it user-friendly, we have divided our template into 10 phases. From laying the foundation to wrapping things up, this template provides a detailed checklist to keep everything on track. The phases include:
- Foundation and vision planning
- Vendor bookings and structural planning
- Planning wedding looks and overall vibes for your event
- Finalizing details of the event
- Getting confirmations from vendors and guests
- Final checks
- Getting ready for “D-Day.”
- Last touchups
- D-day (the wedding day)
- Wrapping things up
Here is a breakdown of what each phase includes.
12-18 Months Out (Foundation and Vision Planning)
This phase is the cornerstone of the entire planning process. In the first few months of wedding planning, couples generally make big early decisions. For example, announcing their engagement, deciding the budget, setting wedding dates, choosing a wedding theme, and selecting a venue.
Here, our checklist template has almost 10 priority wedding tasks that you should handle at least a year before to avoid any last-minute stress. We have used checkboxes throughout the template so that it’s easier for you to pick and choose tasks based on your priority.
A few tasks that couples generally get done with in this phase include,
- Establishing a wedding budget
- Finalizing the wedding date
- Reserving the ceremony/reception venue
- Drafting the initial guest count list
- Identifying key vendors
But it can vary based on a couple’s priorities.
9-12 Months Out (Vendor Bookings and Structure Planning)
This is a very crucial phase, as this is the best time to lock in your key vendors. It includes booking a venue, caterer, photographer/videographer, florist, DJ or band, makeup artist and hairstylist, cake baker, etc. Waiting longer than this means your favorite vendors are already booked.
But of course, this is not the only important task to focus on in this phase. Other things include researching hotels where your guests will be staying, proposing to your wedding party (bridesmaids and groomsmen), researching marriage license requirements in your state, searching for your wedding attire and accessories, creating your wedding day timeline, etc.
To make these decisions easier, you can use our Wedding Vendor Comparison Template, Hotel Comparison Template, and Venue Comparison Template—tools designed to help you evaluate options side by side, compare prices, and make confident choices without the stress.
6-9 Months Out (Planning Look and Vibes)
This phase is less about decisions and more about execution. In this phase, you have already created a timeline, researched your attire, and sent out a save-the-date. Now all you need to do is actual work, which includes booking your officiant, wedding day transport, hair, makeup artist, and honeymoon.
Moreover, it also includes finalizing decor, rentals, gift registry, and ordering your wedding party attire. But of course, everyone has different priorities; that’s why we have made our template completely customizable so that you can edit options if you want to.

3-6 Months Out (Finalizing Details)
You are almost halfway there. This is the phase where you actually start seeing your imagination come to reality as you get together with vendors to get everyone on board with your vision.
You finalize key details such as the menu and wedding rings. Have meetings with the hair and makeup artists to explain to them your vision and set a time and date. Other than that, you can also schedule your dress fittings, adjust your budget, finalize your ceremony details, and prepare your travel documents for the honeymoon.
1-3 Months Out (Getting Confirmations)
This is probably the last “stress phase.” After this, you will be done with decision-making and confirmations. It includes
- Sending wedding invitations
- Tracking RSVPs
- Finalizing photography and music plans
- Confirming guest arrangements
- Sharing the wedding day timeline with vendors and other people involved
Our template can help you stay in control. It keeps everything organized and easy to track. It also includes extra checklist options. You can pick and choose, since every wedding is planned a little differently.

2 Weeks Out (Final Checks)
This is the phase where everything starts to feel real. By this time, you are probably done with major things and only need to tackle the last-minute tasks, such as confirming the guest count and seating chart with the venue and caterer. Now you will have time to sit down, relax, and write down your wedding vows and toasts.
In the last two weeks, you should also finalize the gifts and notes for your fiancée/fiancé. Or treat yourself to a spa/relaxation appointment.
1 Week Out (Getting Prepped for the D Day)
This is the time to start checking the final wedding to-do list. We have included tasks that you should only leave for a week before your wedding, for instance, pressing/steaming wedding attire, preparing vendor payment checks, handing the rings to your bridesmaid or groomsmen, handing the marriage license to the officiant, and pack for the honeymoon
The Day Before (Last Touch Ups)
And just like that, tomorrow you are getting married. This is the day before, and instead of stressing, all you need to do is relax, enjoy your rehearsal dinner, and distribute thank-you gifts to your wedding party.
Don’t forget to have an emergency wedding kit on hand to tackle any last-minute mishaps. Not sure what to include? Our Wedding Day Emergency Kit Checklist has you covered, so you can be fully prepared for everything from mascara smudges to wardrobe fixes—ensuring your day stays as smooth and stress-free as possible.
Wedding Day (the D Day)
Voila! Your big day is here! This is your day; enjoy and relax as much as you can so that you can have beautiful memories to cherish for your life.
The only task suggestion from our end for you is to delegate anything to your bridal party/day-of coordinator and just focus on eating, enjoying, and relaxing on your wedding.

After Wedding (Wrapping Things Up)
Congratulations! Now you are married. But before leaving for your honeymoon, here are a few last things that you should handle so that you can enjoy your honeymoon with a clear mind. This includes clearing vendor payments and gratuities, return rentals, or borrowed items. Also, you should confirm the delivery timeline for photos and videos. Etc.
One important detail is to thank all those who made your big day memorable. Plan for taking some time to send thank-you notes to your friends and family for their presence and gifts. Use a Thank-You note tracker to make sure no one is missed.
