What is an Employee Training Plan

To define the core logistics of the training, you can add all key details such as program name, host, program type, mode of delivery, location, number of sessions, and duration in this part of the template.

You can customize this section to include any pre-training requirements. This will make sure that all participants come prepared for the training and maximize engagement and effectiveness of the program.

Objectives

Once you have filled in the basic details of the employee and all logistical information of the training, it is time to explain the purpose of the training. The template includes a blank space where you can list down key skills and competencies the employee will gain from the training. To make your objectives results-driven and effective, you can follow the SMART framework (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound).

This section also has four subsections: Milestones, Expected Outcomes, Assessment Checkpoints, and Assessment Methods.

  • Milestones: These represent any key progress point in the training, such as finishing a module, attending a key session, or completing a practical task. You can tailor this section to reflect the specifications of a training, including details like target dates, status updates, and notes. 
  • Expected Outcomes: These refer to what the employee should be able to do or demonstrate by the end of the training. Outcomes should be specific, measurable, and aligned with job responsibilities.
  • Assessment Checkpoint: These are points during the training where the employee’s progress is formally reviewed. You can write information about when evaluations will be planned. You can add rows to the Assessment Checkpoint section to indicate specific checkpoints in the training, or add some “Start Date” and “Due Date” sections to indicate a timeline. 
  • Assessment Methods: Finally, explain how the progress and skills of the employee would be assessed. These could be quizzes, supervisor observations, peer review, practical tasks, feedback sessions, etc. If you want to modify this field, you can include a field for success criteria, for instance, mentioning the score required to pass the test, etc. 

Expert Tip

You can tailor this section to different roles, departments, and training goals. For instance, for IT roles, you can include technical training in the milestone section, or compliance and safety training for warehouse staff.

Resources

No training plan can work well without the right support in place. This section of the template is meant for listing all the materials, tools, and people needed to carry out the training. Whether it’s books, videos, software, or subscriptions, use this space to mention every resource required or available to make the learning process smooth and effective.

When filling out details of resources for the training, make sure that you have added all details for easy identification. For example, if it is an online resource, then include the full link of the website and write the exact URL.  If it is a book, write the Title, Author, and ISBN/Access Link. 

For human resources, such as subject matter experts (SMEs), include the SME’s name, expertise area, and preferred contact method, e.g., email or Slack. Finally, if any dedicated workspace or equipment is required, it should be clearly listed here as well. 

Training Plan Revisions

Learning isn’t always linear. It is possible that employees may need to revisit some parts of the training or need follow-up support. The template has two columns: Dates Retaken and Training Topic to log any areas the employee revisits, along with the date of each retraining session. 

This would facilitate tracking ongoing development and also making sure that the training goals are being achieved.

Make sure that the timestamp is always in a consistent, machine-readable date format (e.g., YYYY-MM-DD). This will help you maintain data integrity when you upload the information to HRIS/LMS for employee records. 

Expert Tip

To customize this section, you can add a new column “Reason for revision” to clarify if the cause was failure, absence, or something else. If your organization wants to set a limit on the number of times someone undertakes a training before the issue is escalated, you can add that column to this section, too.

Training Feedback and Insights

While planning the training is important, it is also essential that you assess the overall usefulness of the training, its relevance, and its impact. 

This section lets you reflect on each completed session by logging the topic covered, completion date, a numerical rating, and any remarks from the reviewer.

And finally, you can indicate the completion status of the training by either selecting the completed checkbox or the one that says additional training required.
