Looking for ways to multiply your wealth without taking on too much risk?
Whether you’re planning for retirement or growing company reserves for a future crisis period, compounding interest is a great way to ensure consistent & reliable financial growth over time.
But how does compounding work? Let me explain.
With compounding interest plans, you can grow your investments more quickly compared to simple interest plans. This is because you earn interest not only on your initial investment but also on the interest that keeps accumulating over time.
Keep in mind that while compounding helps your money grow, inflation eats away at its value—so if inflation rises faster than your savings, your money loses value in the long run.

Calculator At a Glance
Once you download and open the file in Excel (or access via Google Sheets), you can start customizing the sheet to your investment plan.
For proper documentation and record-keeping, make sure to carefully add the name and address of your bank, credit union, brokerage or other platform. This is particularly important if you are tracking multiple investments at once.
Now, your next step is to customize our premade sheet by adding relevant data about your investment plan, say:
- How much are you investing initially?
- How often does your investment plan allow you to ‘compound’ interest?
- How regularly do you make payments to increase your investment, and how much?
- What annual interest rate are you offered by the bank/credit union, etc.?

Compound Frequency Vs. Payment Frequency
If you are new to finance, you might be confused by these terms at first – but here’s some clarity to help you out…
While Compound Frequency refers to how often interest is added (compounded) to your balance, Payment Frequency refers to how often you contribute to your investment. The standard formula we use to calculate the effective rate per contribution period is:
(1 + APR/m)^(m/k) − 1
where m = compounding periods/year, k = contribution periods/year.
For easy customization, we offer a built-in drop-down menu that allows you to choose from a range of industry-standard options:
- Daily
- Weekly
- Biweekly (every 2 weeks)
- Semi-monthly (twice per month – fixed dates)
- Monthly
- Bi-monthly (every 2 months)
- Quarterly
- Semi-annual
- Annual
Adjust for Inflation
Earlier, we touched on the impact of inflation, or a fall in the currency’s purchasing power. In our template, you can easily factor in the effects of inflation on the future value of your investment. Simply enter the current inflation rate in D17, and let the sheet do all the rest.
Future Value Vs. Real Return
Future Value (FV) is the amount your money grows to in the future through compounding, without adjusting for inflation, while Real Return is the actual gain in your purchasing power after adjusting for inflation.
For example, if you deposit $5,000 in a savings account at 6% annual interest for 5 years, the Future Value of your investment will be about $6,691.
But that’s without factoring in the impact of inflation?
Now, if inflation averages 4% per year during that time, your real annual return is ≈ ((1.06 / 1.04) − 1) = 1.923% per year. This means the future $6,691 will only have the buying power of around $5,500 in today’s money.

Evaluate & Compare Savings Plans
In addition to the main sheet, we also designed an interactive evaluation sheet to enable easy comparisons between different savings plans. Test out ‘what if’ scenarios by using different investment terms and initial sums, and see how these affect the future value of your investments.

A well-structured spreadsheet brings forward the information that matters most. For every savings or investment account you are tracking, we highlight six values in clear, bold boxes—giving you a quick snapshot of your investment portfolio:
- Future Value (FV): Value of the account at the end date
- Present Value (PV): The initial investment or deposit
- Real Return: Actual gain after subtracting inflation from nominal returns
- Total Investment: Initial deposit plus all contributions
- Nominal Gain: Increase in money value without considering inflation effects (or FV minus Total Invested).
- Real Gain: Increase in purchasing power after adjusting for inflation (or, Real FV minus Total Invested)

Key Template Features
- A unique tabulated summary of your compound interest account
- A detailed Compound Interest Sheet showing your new balance after each contribution or deposit
- A complete Contribution Calendar to help you track and schedule contributions
- A visual graph showing the contributions vs. interest-earned portions of your balance
- An interactive Evaluation sheet to use as a reference guide for testing multiple investment scenarios
Rounding On/Off Option Available!
For simplicity and consistency, all monthly contributions are rounded to two decimal places by default.
Disable rounding if you prefer more exact figures. Keep in mind that rounding can create a small discrepancy — by slightly understating or overstating the interest.
