Employee Satisfaction Surveys are special feedback forms used to measure how happy employees are with their jobs and overall work experience. Analyzing first-hand insights is a great way to foster clear communication between employees and the company. By giving them a formal avenue to share their honest views, employee surveys boost team morale & increase work productivity while reducing employee turnover in the long haul.

But the thing is, developing an Employee Survey from scratch requires time & effort. To give you a little head start, we offer a pre-made form to help you quickly build a survey form. We have compiled questions to help you understand employees and their needs, allowing you to design HR strategies accordingly. Our survey sections capture four broadly defined thematic areas, hoping to uncover the most critical dimensions of the employee experience:

  • Company Missions & Values
  • Work Environment
  • Job Satisfaction
  • Compensation & Benefits
  • General Feedback

But before delving deeper into each, let’s explore the key features & usage of our template:

Key Template Features

  • Usage: Free, print-ready & 100 % customizable! For your ease, our template is accessible in multiple formats, including Microsoft Word for easy offline editing, OpenDocument (ODT or ODS) for compatibility with various word processors, and via Google Docs for cloud-based sharing, editing, and collaboration.
  • Likert Scale: The Likert scale is the most common rating scale used to measure an individual’s opinions, attitudes, or beliefs, especially those that are subtle, such as job engagement or satisfaction. Use our 5-Point scale to indicate how strongly you agree or disagree with each statement in a quick and intuitive way.
  • Mixed Data Approach: When studying employee attitudes & perception, it’s important to use both: (a) quantifiable data to study & analyze responses statistically, as well as (b) qualitative data for gathering more in-depth knowledge driven by the personal & subjective experience of employees. Our template is focused on both.

Survey Structure

Our Employee Satisfaction Survey includes 27 individual survey points spread out over 5 broad thematic areas. We have deliberately designed our survey points as statements and not questions. This has been done to avoid the risks associated with leading questions that encourage or guide the respondent towards a desired answer based on how they are framed.

Our survey statements can help you identify specific areas of improvement in terms of workplace culture, management style, and employee benefits. Each section in our template has an Additional Feedback section where you can add your detailed remarks or responses if any statement in a section is rated 3 and below.

You can add to, delete, or replace these statements to suit your specific company needs & context.

Now, let’s explore each section in our Employee Satisfaction Survey in more detail…

Company Values & Goals

Companies are driven by goals, values & core functions. As the guiding principles at work, these high-level aspirations also serve as benchmarks for measuring employee satisfaction levels.

Use our default statements to find out:

  • If employees have a clear understanding of what your goals & values are?
  • To what extent is your company driven by a shared purpose, as defined by the company’s mission?
  • If your goals & values have any tangible (positive) impact on what the management does?
  • How proud are employees to be a part of your company?

Work Environment

A positive work environment is one where employees feel valued, heard, supported, and motivated to give their best.

With that in mind, this section is designed to collect data on how employees think & feel about the work environment. For example, do they feel safe & comfortable in the workspace? Do they have a good relationship with their supervisors? Are complaints raised by employees handled in a professional and timely way?

When formulating questions (or statements) for this section, have a good look at the complete range of physical and psychological factors that determine how conducive the environment is to work. From technical concerns about the need for additional tools & resources to more perceptive ones such as the general vibe at work – there’s a lot to uncover here!

Job Satisfaction

So far, we measured the impact of company-level factors such as overall work culture, or the ethos that lies at the heart of the company’s future goals.

But in this section, we bring back focus on the employee, hoping to identify the most critical challenges they face during the course of their professional duties.

Here are some typical examples of questions to include here:

  • Is the work meaningful and fulfilling?
  • Does your job represent the best use of your skills & abilities?
  • Do you feel appreciated for your role & contributions at work?
  • Are you satisfied with your work-life balance?
  • Do you see opportunities for career growth and development in the future?
  • Are you able to manage your deadlines & workload easily?
  • Were you adequately trained for the role during onboarding?

Compensation & Benefits

The most effective way of rewarding employees is through a competitive salary package & side benefits such as bonuses, club memberships & employee discounts.

In this section, you want to get a sense of whether your employees feel adequately remunerated (or otherwise rewarded) for their work.

Note that compensation is not always in the form of financial benefits. You can also use other HR tactics, such as Employee of the Month Awards, to incentivize employees and make them feel valued.

Expert Tip

For each statement, you can analyze your Likert responses either by taking averages (e.g., mean score for a statement) or a percent agreement (say, what percentage of employees chose 4 or 5). This will add more perspective to your analysis process and the resulting findings.

Why Do I Need One?

  • To measure how happy and fulfilled employees are with their job, work environment, and the company overall.
  • Understand employees and their needs
  • To give employees a chance to share their honest views, building trust & transparency
  • Reduce employee turnover
  • Help shape HR strategies
  • Detect issues early (e.g., burnout, poor leadership)

What Happens After the Survey?

The ultimate goal of an Employee Survey is not just to measure satisfaction, but to enhance it. Once the survey is complete, it’s time to analyze trends or problem areas, and start implementing changes. Early intervention based on survey results can help you retain your best employees! In fact, the longer it takes you to act on their feedback, the less trust & confidence your employees will have in you.

Our premade form makes the data collection and feedback analysis process much easier. The primary users of this form are HR officials who can apply these qualitative and quantitative insights to develop more effective HR strategies for improving employee engagement, satisfaction and retention levels.
