Every winning sales strategy starts with a clear plan. But a sales plan isn’t just a list of numbers or a lofty target; rather, it’s the strategy your team will actually use to win. It is like a guidebook for your team to follow and to make things happen, tackle challenges, and move toward goals together.

What is a Sales Plan, Really?

To put it simply, a sales plan defines how your team will achieve its targets. And to answer that question, this document outlines a step-by-step approach that identifies your target market, the strategies that will get you there, and the steps your team needs to take along the way. Sure, your business plan might set the big-picture goals—but the sales plan is where strategy meets action.

A strong plan gives your team clarity. Everyone knows their role, their responsibilities, and their goals. Managers get a clear view of progress and can quickly spot what’s working—and what isn’t. And because it’s structured, it turns the sales process from a guessing game into a repeatable system that actually produces results.

Why Sales Planning Matters

So, you have been in the business for years, and you know the ropes. Do you still need to prepare an actual sales plan document? The answer is YES!

The thing is, even high-performing teams can miss opportunities without a plan. In fact, a staggering 91% of B2B companies failed to hit their sales quota expectations in 2023. A structured sales plan:

  • Keeps everyone aligned – no wasted effort, no crossed wires.
  • Provides focus – everyone knows which activities matter most.
  • Tracks performance – progress is measurable, results are visible.
  • Prepares for challenges – anticipates roadblocks before they derail the plan.

Let’s say you have planned a target of  $250,000 in new business next quarter. But without a plan, your team can miss the target market and let the opportunities slip by. But with a clear plan, you not only know the market, all risks, opportunities, and contingency actions are clearly laid out, and everyone on your team will know exactly how to drive results.

Plan Smarter, Sell Better: the Sales Plan Template

Each section comes with prompts, tables, and examples, so creating a polished, professional plan doesn’t feel like starting from scratch. And yes, it works across industries—whether you’re in B2B, SaaS, retail, or tech.

With this template, you can:

  • Align your team on clear goals and strategies
  • Track progress efficiently and measure results
  • Plan ahead for risks and obstacles
  • Build a repeatable system that drives consistent growth

Now, without any further delay, let us go over each section and see how you can fill it out.

Executive Summary

The Executive Summary of the sales plan is where you condense the most critical information, like objectives, key strategies, and expected results, into a clear, skimmable overview. This allows anyone reviewing the plan to grasp the essentials quickly, set priorities, and know what to focus on, without diving into every detail.

In our template, you will find a simple, uncluttered space to capture this summary efficiently.

You get a simple paragraph space to lay out the big picture. It’s not cluttered but clean and open and ready for you to type in your overview.

How to use this section

Let’s say you’re managing a new regional launch. You could write:

“This plan outlines our strategy to increase our regional client base by 25% over the next quarter by expanding our referral program, enhancing CRM follow-ups, and launching a targeted LinkedIn ad campaign.”

Business Overview

Now we come to the next section, which is the Business Overview. This is the section where you will talk about your business: who you are, what you sell, and where you fit in the market.

This part of the sales plan is important as it helps contextualize the rest of your plan, especially for readers who aren’t familiar with your company. So make sure that you utilize this section well and provide a clear picture of your business.

In the template, you’ll find a space for a freeform paragraph and a prompt to guide you. In this space, you can introduce your business in a few strong lines without any rigid structure.

How to use this section

For some inspiration, you can look at this example:

“At EcoDesk, we provide eco-friendly office supplies for businesses looking to cut down on waste. Our mission is to create practical, sustainable workspaces. This year, we’re focusing on expanding into the B2B corporate market.”

Sales and Objectives

The Sales and Objectives section is all about defining what success looks like. So, if it is monthly revenue goals or lead generation targets, you should put everything in writing here.

Sales and Objectives in Sales Plan Template.Pin

In this section of this template,  you will find a neat, numbered list with ten blank fields labeled “Goal” to spell out a clear sales objective. Not sure about how to write it? See the examples below to get started.

Example

  • Goal: Increase lead-to-close conversion rate by 10%
  • Goal: Secure 5 new enterprise contracts in Q3

By writing down goals like this, you give your team some measurable targets to focus on. An effective approach to setting goals is making sure they are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound (SMART). This will not only help you in monitoring but also keep everyone in the team accountable. If you want to learn more about SMART goals, check out our template here to clearly plan them.

Market Analysis

This section is thoughtfully divided into four sub-sections. Each sub-section has its own table or fillable space to help you break things down in a structured way:

  • SWOT Analysis
  • Competitive Analysis
  • Market Growth Forecast
  • Marketing Strategies

pro tip

Pair this Sales Plan Template with our Market Research WBS Template to turn market insights into structured tasks and clear action steps.

You’ll find tables with columns ready to fill in, bulleted space for lists, and freeform areas with prompts to help you think things through clearly.

a. SWOT analysis

This table helps you identify your internal strengths and weaknesses, as well as the external opportunities and threats that may impact your sales performance. It’s a great way to zoom out and evaluate where your sales efforts stand in the big picture.

Visit our SWOT Analysis Blog for strategies on analyzing each factor effectively and applying it to your sales plan.

Example

  • Strengths: Loyal customer base, strong referral program
  • Weaknesses: Limited automation tools
  • Opportunities: Rising demand for eco-friendly products
  • Threats: Cheaper overseas competitors

b. Competitive analysis

Competitive analysis involves identifying key competitors, analyzing their products, pricing, market positioning, strengths, and weaknesses, and understanding market trends. Once you have identified these factors about your competitors, then you can focus on your sales efforts to achieve your targets.

Let me share an example of a hypothetical competitor OfficeZen, for a product. Their low prices and quick delivery are their strengths, and poor account management is identified as a weakness. This is how you will put it in the template.

c. Market growth forecast

A market growth forecast is an estimation of the future size, demand, or revenue potential of a specific market or industry over a given period. This information is based on historical data, market trends, and economic factors, and is vital for your sales planning. There are various forecasting models and techniques that you can use to arrive at those numbers for the coming years.

In this sales plan template, we have made it easier for you to present this information in a neat table format. Columns include Year, Market Size (in dollars), Market Share (percentage), and Customer Base.

Knowing our target audience is essential if you want to avoid a generic, one-size-fits-all approach. To help you achieve a focused sales plan, the Target Audience section in the template provides some key information aspects related to your target customer base.

This section of the sales plan lets you pin down the numbers. It helps you set performance benchmarks and see how sales goals align with your broader business objectives.

Sales Strategies and Tactics

This is the part where your sales plan gets actionable. Instead of just saying “increase sales,” you break down how you’ll do it. You’ll map out the approaches like cold outreach, upselling, or event-based marketing and pair each one with practical steps your team can carry out.

This section of the template gives you five pre-labeled strategy blocks. Each one includes a space to name the strategy and a follow-up area to describe the methodology and specific tactics.

Example

Sales Strategies and Tactics:

  • Strategy 01: Expand upsell offers
  • Methodology and Tactics:
    • Train the customer success team on upsell triggers
    • Add new bundle pricing to CRM templates
    • Follow up with existing clients post-onboarding

Resource Allocation

Even the best strategy will fail if we do not have the right people and the right tools to achieve it. We have divided the Resource Allocation section into two parts: Human Resources and Technical Resources. In the Human Resources section, you can outline your team’s roles, skills, and bandwidth. And the Technical Resource section is for mapping out the tools, CRMs, and technology needed to execute the sales strategy.

a. Human resources

You get a table in this section of the template with fields for Department, Team, Role, Number Required, and Skills. You can list out your staffing plan in a clear, no-fuss format.

This helps you plan out your people power. Write down how many team members you need, what skills they should bring to the table, and which departments need support.

Example:

DepartmentTeamRoleNumber RequiredSkills

b. Technical resources

This section is a simple table and has columns for adding No., Resource, Quantity. All you have to do is list the tools and systems you’ll rely on.

You’ll use this part to figure out what platforms, tools, or subscriptions your team needs to carry out the plan efficiently.

Action Plan

So now we come to the part where big-picture strategy turns into concrete, doable tasks with deadlines and accountability. In the Action Plan part of sales planning, you will identify the specific activities (such as launching an email campaign or making 50 prospecting calls per week) that need to be carried out and their details, like the person responsible for it, the deadline for it, etc.

Our template has neatly organized all this information into four text fields:

  • Action Step
  • Responsible
  • Timeline
  • Expected Outcome
Action Plan in Sales Plan Template.Pin

So let’s say one of the action steps is launching a new referral program for your product. It will look something like this in the sales plan.

  • Action Step: Launch new referral program
  • Responsible:  Marketing Manager
  • Timeline: August 1–15
  • Expected Outcome: 200 new leads from referrals

Your strategy needs a timeline, owners, and expectations. The Action Plan section lets you break things down into bite-sized, trackable tasks so nothing falls through the cracks.

Sales Budget

Set measurable benchmarks and track financials. Having clearly defined targets and a structured budget allows your team to assess performance and make informed adjustments.

In this template, we facilitate sales budget planning by providing A simple, editable table with a few sample expense categories already filled in (like commissions, ad costs, and CRM tools). You can add more as needed. There’s a total at the bottom to sum it all up.

To make things clearer, here’s a sample filled-in Sales Budget from the template. This will give you a real look at how you can use this section.

LinkedIn Ads $2,000/month
Sales team commissions$8,000

Whether you’re working with a lean budget or a full marketing spend, this section helps you stay on track financially. By mentioning accurate figures, you ensure your sales plan is grounded in reality.

Contingency Strategies

No matter how accurate your planning is, one must always prepare for unforeseen situations. Make sure that you account for all possible contingency factors in your planning with actionable backups. Identify potential roadblocks, assess their impact, and outline alternative strategies—keeping your plan resilient.

The template has a four-column table with fields for Risks, Impact, Likelihood, and Contingency Strategies. It’s designed to be simple and scalable, so you can add as many risks as needed.

Conclusion

Now it’s time to tie everything together. The conclusion section is where your strategy and planning become commitment.  Wrap up your sales plan with a motivating conclusion. Reiterate your main objectives to make sure that everyone is on the same page about the sales strategy and targets.

We have provided a free-form paragraph section, similar to the Executive Summary in the sales plan template. Write as much as you write and end your document with a strong statement of confidence.
