Weddings, birthday parties, anniversaries, or any kind of celebration feel incomplete without the presence of lively and fun music. Hiring professional DJ services can bring energy and excitement to any event. But the problem occurs when bookings are based on informal agreements with unclear terms. It can lead to confusion over performance hours, payment terms, cancellations, and equipment management. Without clear expectations, both the DJs and the clients can struggle to maintain a smooth working relationship.

What Is a DJ Contract?
A DJ contract is a professional agreement between a DJ and a client that outlines the terms and conditions of a music performance. It protects the DJs from last-minute cancellations and unpaid services. For the client, it assures that the agreed services will be delivered as expected.
Now, let us walk you through the main sections of this template.
Parties of the Contract and Event Details
Your first step is to write down the date on which the contract is being entered and identify the details of both parties. It can include:
- Full legal names of the disc jockey and the client
- Business names of both (if any)
- Their phone numbers
- Emails
- Addresses
Be sure to add accurate names and addresses of both parties. If the DJ is an employee of a DJ-providing company or if the client is an event planning company, then you should mention business names as well.
I. Event details
In this section of the template, specify the event details. Our template provides blank spaces in which you can mention the state, venue name, event date, event type, event time, event’s full address, and minimum service duration.
Scope of Work
Clauses II and III have been added to define the scope of work and avoid scope creep. Let’s discuss in detail.
II. Services provided
Here, list all the services that the DJ will provide, for example, DJ performance, sound system, lighting (if any), MC/hosting services, setup and breakdown, etc.
Our template also allows clients to submit music preferences, playlists, or do-not-play lists. These requests must be provided in advance of the event within a specific time period. The timeline is set after the mutual agreement of both parties.
III. Equipment and setup
This section clarifies that the DJ will be responsible for all standard sound equipment needed for the performance unless otherwise agreed.
The clause also holds the client responsible for providing adequate electrical power, sufficient space, and safe and secure conditions. We have also introduced another option, “others.” This space is left blank so that you can fill it out as per your situation.
Moreover, it requires the DJ to arrive in advance for preparation and sound checks. The client also needs to ensure that the DJ gets timely access to the venue.
Compensation
Next up, we have the compensation section. In our template, clauses IV, V, VI, and VII are added to cover different types of payments and terms. It includes deposit, overtime, and reimbursement of expenses.
IV. Payment terms
This clause sets the terms for how the DJ will be compensated for their services, for example, an hourly rate, flat fee (per event), or any other agreed payment structure.
Once you have decided how the DJ will be compensated, the next step is to determine when they will be compensated. Our template mentions three options:
- After completion of services
- On the day of the event
- Other (specify)
Failure to remit payment as agreed may result in cancellation of services at the DJ’s sole discretion.
V. Deposit
A deposit is usually paid to confirm the DJ’s availability beforehand to avoid any inconvenience later. But when completing this section, keep in mind that the deposit is not an extra fee or income. It is just a part of the DJ’s compensation that they get earlier and is applied towards the total payment.
Our agreement template allows parties to define whether the deposit is refundable or non-refundable by checking the applicable checkboxes. Moreover, failure to pay the deposit can result in loss of the event date reservation, at the sole discretion of the DJ.
For example, if the flat fee for an event is $1000 and both the client and DJ decide on a $200 deposit fee, then the remaining payment will be $800.
VI. Overtime rate
This clause makes sure that the DJ is compensated fairly in case of overtime. Our template lets both parties set the overtime rate after mutual decision.
But here it’s important to consider the availability of a DJ for overtime services. In case of prior commitments or logistical constraints, the DJ reserves the right to decline overtime requests.
VII. Reimbursement of expenses
This section allows parties to decide whether the DJ will be reimbursed for out-of-pocket costs (additional expenses) or not. It includes expenses such as travel, accommodation, or equipment purchases. If you select reimbursement, then the amount must be paid before the deadline set by the signing parties.
Next up, the clause requires any reimbursable expenses to be pre-approved by the client. For approval, it should be supported by proper documentation. It further sets limits on unapproved and large expenses. Our template leaves a blank space for the spending limit. Both parties can fill it out after deciding.
Let’s say you have set a spending limit of $150, but DJ travels from one state to another and books a hotel without prior approval, which costs $300. In this case, the client can legally refuse reimbursement of extra charges.

VIII. Independent Contractor Status
This clause establishes DJ as an independent contractor and not as an employee, partner, agent, or joint venture of the client.
Hiring a DJ as an independent contractor means they are not an employee under U.S. labor law. This means that the client doesn’t provide benefits, withhold payroll taxes, or include them in their regular workforce.
Unlike an employee, clients don’t control how DJs do their work, but only agree on the result (the event performance). The DJ operates as a separate business and is responsible for their own taxes, insurance, and work arrangements.
Next up, this clause allows the DJ to hire any assistant or subcontractor for their help. The client will not be responsible for their payment.
IX. Taxes
The DJ will be responsible for handling their own taxes as they are hired as independent contractors. It includes all kinds of payments such as income taxes, self-employment taxes, social security, and any applicable unemployment or business taxes.
X. Termination
This section discusses termination of the contract. Our template allows four options. You can select whatever fits your circumstances.
- Automatic termination: Both parties set a date on which the contract will be terminated without any notice period.
- Termination by the client: The client can terminate the agreement at any time with or without reason by providing a set number of days’ notice period.
- Termination by the DJ: The DJ can terminate the contract with a notice period.
- Other: Select this option if other terms apply
Confidentiality and Indemnification
Clause XI is about “keeping things private” and maintaining the confidentiality of any sensitive or personal information by the client. It includes any non-public information such as guest lists, event lists, payment terms, personal contact numbers, or anything that is shared verbally, over the phone, or in writing. Our template allows clients to set a time period during which the obligation will continue.
Moreover, the clause also provides DJ protection by including playlists, performance techniques, and business practices as proprietary.
If your event involves private or sensitive information, you can use a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) to keep details secure; easily create one for your requirements.
Clause XII makes it clear that the DJ will be responsible for any harm, damage, or loss caused by the actions of their personally hired assistants or subcontractors. According to this provision, the DJ agrees to hold the client harmless from any legal claims, losses, or expenses resulting from the performance of services.

Standard Legal Provisions
This template also includes several standard legal provisions that govern how the agreement is interpreted and enforced.
XIII. Force majeure
States that neither the DJ nor the client will be held responsible for any delay or failure of performance caused by circumstances beyond their control. These mostly include, but are not limited to, natural disasters, wars, protests, or any emergencies. In this case, the contract and the obligations of both parties will be suspended.
XIV. Dispute Resolution: Both parties should try to resolve a dispute initially through good faith negotiation. In case of failure, parties should seek the help of a neutral mediator. Our template allows you to set a timeline of good-faith discussions and leaves a blank space for the city and state of mediation. In case the dispute still remains unresolved, either party can seek legal help unless agreed otherwise in writing.
XV. No Waiver: If a party chooses not to enforce a provision at one time, it does not waive its right to enforce it later. Let’s say a client booked a DJ for a 5-day event. During day one, the DJ didn’t follow the playlist that had been agreed upon, but the client didn’t object to it. That does not mean that the client has lost his right to enforce this in the coming days.
XVI. Amendments
States that any amendment or modification to the contract must be made in writing and signed by both parties.
XVII. Governing law
Both parties can write down the name of the state under whose law this contract is being governed. We have left a blank space for you to write down your state name.
XVIII. Severability
Added to ensure that, in case a court declares any term of this contract as invalid or illegal, the rest of the contract still stands.
XIX. Additional terms and conditions
Both parties can write down terms that are not already part of this agreement. For example, the client agrees to provide a meal and non-alcoholic beverages for the DJ if the performance exceeds the set hours.
XX. Entire agreement
Confirms that the document is the complete understanding between the parties.
Signatures make the contract legally valid by showing both parties agree to the terms.

However, premium event rates can go even higher.
